US Election: Pandemic surge hits campaign trail

Over the weekend, at least four of Vice-President Mike Pence’s team tested positive for coronavirus, as the surge in US cases hit the White House itself. Trump continued to downplay the pandemic during a New Hampshire rally on Sunday, whilst the White House chief of staff delivered a stark message, telling CNN that ‘We are not going to control the pandemic’.

Trump is running out of time to catch up to his rival who holds a comfortable lead in the national polls and the Republican party’s attitude towards Covid-19 is unlikely to help the President’s flagging popularity. The US Dollar has risen almost 0.5% since Friday as markets view the rise in new infections as problematic for global growth prospects.
