Top things to do when you live in New Zealand

Whether you’re retiring Down Under or moving for work, relocating to New Zealand can open up lots of new ways to enjoy your free time. We’ve collected some expat-favourite ideas to get you started, so you can make plans for some new adventures Down Under.

Go wine tasting

From Sauvignon Blanc to Merlot, New Zealand’s vineyards produce wine known for its purity, vibrancy, and intensity—and why not taste it at the source? Spend an afternoon at a vineyard learning about the unique influence of New Zealand’s geography and climate on its produce, and then pick up a bottle or two to enjoy at home.

Explore New Zealand’s rich culture

Māori and European customs combine to create an incredibly interesting culture in New Zealand. You can learn more by visiting museums and other spaces that explore elements of Māori culture like Manaakitanga (hospitality) and Kaitiakitanga (respect). Later on, you may want to visit to a marae, which is a sacred meeting ground at the heart of Māori communities.

See New Zealand’s native glow-worms

In New Zealand, caves like those in Waitomo and Te Anau are home to millions of native glow-worms that provide beautiful displays of natural light. You can explore the caves by walking tour or boat ride to marvel at the luminescent ceilings. Some locations even offer night-time tours.

Be restored by a geothermal bath

For a more relaxing experience, you may want to take a dip in a geothermal bath or hot spring. The waters—known as waiariki in Māori—are said to have therapeutic qualities and can help you feel relaxed and restored.

Enjoy a hot-air balloon ride above New Zealand

From mountain peaks to lush green fields, New Zealand’s scenery is breathtaking, and what better way to take in your surroundings than floating high above it all in a hot-air balloon? The mild climate is very accommodating but booking between April and October will help you maximise your chance of getting the best views.
