The benefits of living somewhere sunny – A Place in the Sun 2020

Every year we attend A Place in the Sun Live, where we meet lots of people looking to buy a holiday home or a new permanent home abroad. The next event takes place between 6th-8th March in Manchester and is the largest overseas property exhibition in Europe. There are over 150 exhibitors from across the globe, specialist industry experts to answer questions about your move, and talks from the stars of the tv show.

We’ve secured free tickets to the event too, which would usually cost £12 per person.

If you’re considering moving abroad, here are some of our favourite benefits of living somewhere sunny.

Less stress and better mental performance

When your eyes take in rays from the sun, your brain produces more serotonin which improves your mood. Meanwhile, melatonin is the hormone that makes us sleepy, and this is reduced when you’re in the sunlight. Stress hormones are also lessened in the sunshine. Some research has shown that your mental performance and memory can be improved by warmer weather too. Living and even working outdoors can play a huge part in improving your overall mental performance and reducing stress levels.

More active and more time outdoors

When the weather’s nice, it’s natural to want to spend time in it. Whether it’s walking across coastal clifftops or spending time in the water, generally people want to be outside more. One of the great things about moving to a new country is the different culture and the diversity in activities. You might take up water sports, walking more to explore lots of little towns and markets, spend more time at the beach, or find yourself adventuring to visit historical sites.

Feel healthier

Warmer places offer much more Vitamin D, which can help in preventing cancer, strengthening your bones, and boosting your energy levels. Additionally, viruses find it more difficult to survive in the warmth, so there’s less likelihood of feeling run-down with common illnesses. You may even like to cycle or walk to work; whereas in the UK this can sometimes seem like a chore, it can be a relaxing way to finish the working day as the temperature cools.
